Corrina Rothwell
(abstract collection)

Featured Artist

Corrina Rothwell is a notable contemporary Nottingham artist who creates beautiful abstract artwork.

Originally from a small village called Newhey, near Rochdale, Lancashire, Corrina was the child of two artist parents. Corrina begun a foundation course at Rochdale Art College, where she learned machine embroidery. Corrina worked in textiles for 14 years before becoming a greeting card publisher for 10 years, illustrating and printing independently. From 2018, Corrina turned her focus to painting, and has since become distinctive across Nottingham for her vibrant and visceral abstract artworks.

“I get such a kick out of colour, putting weird colours together, making them dance with each other, show each other off. The other thing that I get a kick out of in my work is being hands-on and practical… I paint in acrylics, and I use all sorts of other things along with the paint - crayons, oil sticks, collage, image transfer, ink, spray paint….I use brushes, fingers, hands, screwdrivers, sandpaper, scratch awls, dead biros….”

Corrina’s painting career has spanned several distinct eras, from fully abstract artwork featuring vivid colours and shapes, to semi-abstract landscapes with emerging industrial structures, to moody narrative pieces featuring more figurative shapes.

Corrina’s artwork has been exhibited at The Old Lock Up Gallery (Cromford), Cupola Contemporary Art (Sheffield), Lakeside Arts and Surface Gallery (Nottingham), the Pyramid Gallery (York), the Tarpey Gallery (Castle Donington), Museum of Making (Derby) and Wirksworth Festival & Arts Trail. Corrina is a licensed artist by Tall Boy Prints and is regularly featured in the LeftLion.

Imara are delighted to be auctioning pieces from Corrina’s abstract period prior to 2023, created before her move back towards semi-abstract landscapes and more figurative art.

An original by Corrina Rothwell can sell for as much as £2,800, with square paintings on board such as featured in Imara’s charity auction often valued at £300-£500.

We also have the pleasure of showcasing a number of Corrina’s humorous illustrations, available to buy as prints within the auction and as postcards, bookmarks, badges and coasters from the exhibition postcard shop.

About the Piece

'All the pieces on display are painted in acrylic paint on plywood panels. I paint intuitively, in that I don't have in mind a particular outcome when I begin. The joy in the work for me comes from putting colours and shapes together, building up layers and then maybe sanding them down or partially painting over them, scratching marks into the paint, and scribbling with a pencil. It's a very physical process, and delightfully messy too- I often use my hands to apply colour which is very liberating!'
