Jean Vincentte Taylor
About the Artist
These pieces of artwork were generously donated by a friend of Imara, Louise Zelpha Garvey, who passed away on 18th May 2026. Louise’s community activism, care for black history and achievement, and passion for people and justice means she leaves behind an important legacy in Nottingham, one that has been commemorated by the Standing in this Place statue in the Green Heart of Nottingham (near the Central Library).
Read more about Louise's legacy here.
Louise was married at 19 years old and had four children, two daughters and two sons. Louise and her children experienced abuse over many years at the hands of her husband, culminating in the tragic murder of her eldest daughter, Jean, at the hands of her father. Jean was still only a teenager when she died. The pieces you see here today are those created by Jean during her time at school, a keen and talented artist. The sculpture of the two faces came to have a much deeper meaning when the truth about the abuse Jean had endured became known.
Louise was guided through the unbearable tragedy of losing her daughter by her strong and ever-lasting faith; her life was a tapestry of kindness, strength, and love, woven through every moment she shared with family and friends.
We at Imara feel so privileged to be able to show Jean’s artwork and to continue her legacy. Louise trusted us with something so very precious, tireless in her desire to turn her experiences to good. As such, we do not feel that we can suggest a price for either of these pieces, their value being so firmly rooted in love. Louise and her family would like to see these pieces go to a home where they will be loved for the joy that they bring and respected for the strength they represent. Every penny donated will go directly towards children, young people and families who have experienced abuse, empowering them to see the light in the darkness and to move forward with hope.
“If you listen with your heart, you will hear.
All of my love around you, soft and clear.
Then, when you must come this way alone,
I’ll greet you with a smile and a welcome home.”
Beloved Farewell: I’ll always be with you
